The
construction industry represents some 15% of Scotland’s economy and it has been widely argued that development reaps nearly 5 times the initial investment via spin offs and that investment being re-circulated within the economy. The DIA wish to ensure that politicians of all colours recognise the important role that architecture plays in the economy, after all 25% of tourists say that they visit Scotland because of its architecture. The very mixed findings of a survey of DIA members has highlighted that the economy appears to be stabilising, and that there is the first glimmers of optimism for a long time, but that is balanced by significant concerns regarding the availability of private investment and the desire of the banks to back such activity, the extent to which red tape may block development and worryingly 60% of our respondents considered that there would be a reduction in construction tenders over the coming year. This is your opportunity to question our political leaders first hand, and to underline the important role architects, engineers, surveyors and contractors play in the Scottish economy. The DIA gratefully acknowledge the assistance of the Scottish Construction Centre and the Tayside Construction Forum in facilitating this event. The event will be chaired by the well known Scottish television journalist Neil Mudie.

The panel will consist of:
Jim McGovern MP
Stewart Hosie MP
Murdo Fraser MSP
Lib Dem MP/MSP to be confirmed
Clive Gilman Director, Dundee Contemporary Arts
